If there's one obscure meme I really love, it's the Siberian Shaman (link to Sacred Texts, buy the cd-rom to play at home!). Actually, it's Amur tigers and snow leopards I love, both resident in my local zoo (actual Syracusan animals in the links), so I conspired to create an elaborately complex novel, which I now believe will encompass more than one volume, to will allow me to write about both big cats. As the Amur River valley is located in Siberia, the presence of a Siberian Shaman is basically mandatory.
Today, I'm scanning my RSS lazily and I stumble on a description of illustrations in Siberian-themed book (One Hundred Siberian Postcards by Richard Wirick) on Bookslut. I don't spend a lot of time reading Bookslut articles, I say defensively and somewhat hypocritically, but I know a hot chick with the screenname Bookslut, so I give the blog more leeway than I normally would. But, they do have some excellent tastes (see The Arrival) and it's worth the peeks I throw their way.
There will be more shamanistic material coming, and I wanted to point to the specific inspiration for this blog- The Rake's post on commonplace books. Like he, I am hopeful to use this space as a synthesis of reading and writing.
